Today was the first day of classes. I was so excited to start the academic aspect of the program and couldn’t wait to meet my language partner. Rising early, I dressed in a nice outfit before rushing out (Of course, bringing my travel companion, Cowy along with me). It was a hot day (when was it not?) when the group embarked on the 15 min trek to the university. By the time we arrived, everyone was drenched in sweat, but that didn’t stop the joyful chitchat as everyone got to know each other. Looking back on that day, I realize how beautiful and special it was. Who knew I’d grow so close to these people and fall in love with Taiwan so deeply?

June 28th, 2023
Today was the first cultural trip of the program and it was amazing! We went to 228 Peace Memorial Park where we learned about Taiwan’s arduous journey to independence and stability. I appreciated the natural beauty of the park as well as the impressive temples and structures.
While we explored the park, our fearless guide explained the history and gave intense meaning to the memorials we were surrounded by. Even though it was in Chinese, I enjoyed testing my listening skills. In addition, our guide had a unique charisma to him that made it really fun.
Cowy really loved this particular temple. Not only was he able to enjoy the beautiful Taiwanese culture and architecture but he could also make some new friends with the turtles in the moat.
Who doesn’t want to be as strong and proud as this horse? I definitely know one cow who thoroughly enjoyed posing for this photo. Of course, he asked first before hopping on.

Beitou was beautiful. Words cannot describe the love I have for that location. It was an energizing combination of natural beauty, adventure, and culture. I loved learning about the natural hot springs, the history of the location, and seeing the awesome buildings that stand today. One of the highlights of the trip was Beitou’s library, which projects one of my favorite architecture styles, combining nature with modern designs. Not to mention, spreading out under the beautiful library was a gorgeous garden that hosted a whole swath of lotuses and other flora. I felt so lucky to be there.
Cowy was so grateful to rest his tired hooves. He enjoyed stretching out and gazing out upon the garden that lay below. He also loved the beautiful tinkling of the wind chime red lanterns that decorated the roof.
July 9th, 2023
I LOVED JIUFEN. This experience has got to be one of my favorites - something that I will remember for years and years. It was so exhilarating and lively to walk the crowded streets and explore the many multi-colored shops along the way. It was also nice to be in the shade. I would definitely return. A few times I was overwhelmed by the crowds, but my fearless language partner led us through the throngs. A super cool part of the trip was meeting a fellow student that goes to my school! We were from different programs so it felt like a crazy twist of fate to meet someone 2,000 miles away. One piece of advice for this location: drink lots of water. I was also really pleased about today because I got to buy my dad a wonderful clay frog whistle. He probably won’t play it, but it was the thought that counts, I think.
Tofu may not be his favorite food ever, but the company made it all the better. Cowy enjoyed meeting the ladies in the background and he hopes to have more positive experiences like this one.
Cowy made some more new friends today! He usually isn’t into horror but these guys were too cool to pass up.
Just enjoying the amazing view. Boy was the ledge hot - you could cook ramen noodles on that thing!
