Studying abroad comes with important responsibilities and we want you to know what to expect before you commit to a program. Here you will find information about program payments and refunds, withdrawals, academic expectations, student conduct, health and safety, insurance coverage, accommodations, travel, housing, and other policies that apply to American Councils participants.
We understand that circumstances can change after you apply or accept a position on a study abroad program. Because American Councils begins making program arrangements and incurring costs on a participant's behalf well before departure, the amount that can be refunded depends on when a participant withdraws.
Your health and safety are important to us. American Councils participants are enrolled in international insurance coverage for the duration of their program abroad.
Coverage is administered by Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and includes accident and sickness coverage as well as emergency assistance and evacuation benefits.
Once enrolled in CISI, you will receive an email containing important insurance information and documents, including your insurance ID card, current plan brochure and coverage details, a consulate letter for proof of insurance when required for a visa, a claim form, CISI contact information, and access to the myCISI Participant Portal and CISI Traveler App.
Keep your insurance information accessible while abroad and bring your insurance ID card with you when seeking medical treatment.
American Councils' international insurance includes coverage for eligible accident and sickness expenses as well as benefits related to medical evacuation, security evacuation, repatriation, and certain travel-related expenses.
Coverage limits, exclusions, and benefits may change by policy year. Participants should review the current CISI Plan Brochure for the complete schedule of benefits and coverage terms.
American Councils participants are expected to contribute to a safe, respectful, and productive program environment. Participants must follow applicable U.S. and host-country laws, visa requirements, host-institution rules, and American Councils program policies.
Serious violations including illegal drug use, unsafe alcohol-related behavior, visa violations, unauthorized employment, or conduct that puts participants or others at risk may result in disciplinary action or dismissal from the program, loss of academic credit, and/or early return home.
All participants are responsible for understanding and following program expectations. Please review the policies below carefully before participating in an American Councils program.
