As a current master’s student in Russian East European and Central Asian studies with a focus on the Black Sea region and the Russian and Romanian languages, my summer in Moldova has been truly formative. I can’t help but compare this experience to my previous experience when I was here during the Covid lockdowns in the winter. With everything open again, Chisinau seems like an entirely different city brought to life with the end of Covid restrictions and the festive summer weather. I appreciate the bustling parks, lively restaurants, and enchanting fountains scattered throughout the city.
As the only student of the Romanian language here in Chisinau, my experience thus far has been far more immersive than I expected. Most notably, this provides a one-on-one format in all my classes. This intimate learning environment allows for a more intense and focused study, enabling me to make significant progress in a relatively short period. The individual attention and tailored instruction I receive have enhanced the effectiveness of my language acquisition journey, making it a truly immersive and rewarding experience. This robust teaching program is bolstered by extracurriculars, including biweekly meetings with a language partner, engaging excursions, a welcoming host family, and volunteering to support the American Council’s programs for local Moldovan students.
While studying diligently during weekdays, my weekends have been reserved for exciting excursions to various locations around Moldova. I have visited some of the country's most magnificent monasteries and pilgrimage spots. Exploring the Haincu Monastery, Orhei Vechi, and Saharna Monastery has deepened my understanding of Moldovan culture and enriched my overall experience. I also enjoyed my trip to the Purcari winery and this opportunity to delve into Moldova’s vibrant wine culture. Each location I have visited has unique historical and spiritual significance, creating a profound connection between the land and its people.
As I delve further into my Romanian studies, I am beginning to grasp the intricate blend of Russian and Romanian influences present in Moldova. Both languages provide me exclusive access to a deeper understanding of the country's dynamics, which many outsiders may not fully appreciate. Being one of the few Americans who are proficient in both languages gives me a unique advantage, allowing me to explore the cultural nuances and engage with locals on a more profound level. The realization of this dual linguistic influence has ignited my curiosity and has opened doors to incredible opportunities for personal growth. The more I immerse myself in the local culture, the more I realize the true value of language skills in connecting with people and grasping the essence of a place. My increasing proficiency in Romanian has allowed me to forge meaningful connections, discover hidden gems, and truly integrate myself into the fabric of Moldovan society.
Studying Romanian intensively in Chisinau has been a summer of growth, adventure, and profound immersion. From the bustling streets and charming parks to the breathtaking monasteries and pilgrimage spots, every moment has been filled with awe and inspiration. Being one of the few Americans mastering Romanian and Russian has allowed me to embrace the country’s beauty fully and positioned me for a promising future focused on this captivating region.
