The Almaty Food Scene

The exchange rate between the Kazakh Tenge and the American Dollar, along with the respective values of each, have allowed me to explore the vast food scene that Almaty has to offer. Boasting itself as a “Многонациональная страна” (Multinational country), it would make sense as to why the largest city in the country showcases a very international food culture. I have found that the most widespread and popular food types in the city are Uighur (namely lagman), traditional Kazakh, and arguably the city’s favorite, Georgian.

Shashlik, khachapuri, and other Georgian dishes are what almost every Almaty resident raves about. Since the dollar goes far here in Kazakhstan, I have been able to feast at numerous Georgian restaurants around the city and really experience the true shashlik culture. Though Georgian food is a bit more expensive than other types of food, I have found delicious shashlik buffets for $6! When I am in the mood for something on the cheaper side, I almost always gravitate towards Lagman.

Lagman is a very popular Uighur noodle dish that can be found on every block in Almaty. Lagman allows a slight break from the normal Kazakh cuisine, in that it isn’t heavily meat centered, and most of all, it’s typically very spicy! It is a very cheap and filling dish, which can satisfy someone for typically less than $3. Conveniently, there is a really tasty lagmanhana located right across the street from the university.

Food travel and exploration is one of my biggest hobbies. So having the opportunity to try new cuisines and new dishes while in Kazakhstan has been amazing, and has added so much to my experience in the city.
