YSU Highlights American Councils Students' Experience in Armenia

Two University of Wisconsin–Madison students participating in the American Councils Russian Language and Area Studies (RLASP) program are sharing their experiences studying at Yerevan State University (YSU), offering prospective students a firsthand look at academic and cultural life in Armenia.

In a recent feature published by YSU, Claire Czajkowski and Jack Smith discuss why they chose to study through the American Councils–YSU partnership, what has surprised them most about Armenia, and how the experience is supporting their academic and professional goals.

Claire said she selected YSU because it offered the opportunity to study Russian in a place unlike anywhere she had previously visited.

"I chose YSU because it was the most interesting place to study Russian abroad. I had never traveled to the Caucasus before, so I wanted to choose the most interesting and unfamiliar place for me."

Jack emphasized the reputation of both Yerevan State University and American Councils in the United States.

"I wanted to see Armenia while receiving the best education. For me, YSU is exactly that best choice."

During their two-month program, students complete an intensive curriculum that includes Russian grammar, literature, phonetics, and the geography of Russia, while also exploring Armenian culture. Courses are taught entirely in Russian, and Jack has also chosen to study Armenian alongside his Russian coursework. Both students praised YSU's faculty for providing a supportive learning environment while maintaining high academic expectations that challenge them to continue improving.

Outside the classroom, Armenia has made a lasting impression on both students. Claire was struck by Yerevan's fashion and style, while Jack highlighted the warmth of the people and the sense of security he has experienced.

"My first impression is how kind people are. I truly feel safe here."

The students also shared ambitious career aspirations shaped by their international experiences. Claire hopes to work in international humanitarian assistance and human rights, while Jack plans to pursue a career in international law.
